Star Trek: Discovery (2017 – 2024)

(CASTELLANO) A pesar de que muchos la han criticado por alejarse del tono clásico de la franquicia, Star Trek: Discovery ha conseguido algo que pocas series logran: reinventarse temporada tras temporada sin perder su esencia. En lugar de tirar de nostalgia fácil, se lanza hacia adelante —en el tiempo y en lo narrativo— con una apuesta valiente por la acción, el suspense y una ambientación más belicosa que otras entregas de la saga. Y, al menos en mi caso, eso le sienta genial. Una de las claves está en su ritmo. Discovery no se detiene. Va al grano. Las tramas se abren pronto, hay tensión, movimiento y una sensación constante de urgencia que recuerda más a Picard que a Voyager o Deep Space Nine. Aquí todo se vive al límite: los personajes no se esconden, se arriesgan, dudan, cometen errores… y eso les da verdad. Claro que hay capítulos que se vienen arriba sin necesidad y momentos en los que algunos personajes secundarios quedan algo desdibujados. Pero cuando la serie conecta, lo hace con fuerza. La producción visual es una pasada, el diseño de sonido funciona muy bien y hay escenas que, si las ves en una buena pantalla, te meten de lleno en la historia sin esfuerzo. Michael Burnham, interpretada por Sonequa Martin-Green, es el alma de la serie. Ha cambiado muchísimo desde sus inicios. Antes era difícil entenderla del todo, pero con el tiempo se ha convertido en una figura cercana, contradictoria, incluso frágil a veces, pero siempre decidida. No es perfecta, ni falta que hace. Por eso funciona. En resumen, Discovery me ha parecido una de las propuestas más atractivas del universo Star Trek moderno. Entiendo que no sea para todos los públicos, pero precisamente ahí está su valor: se arriesga. En lugar de repetir fórmulas, se lanza a explorar. Porque, al final, eso es lo que ha sido siempre Star Trek: una invitación a ir más allá. (ENGLISH) Despite receiving criticism for straying from the classic tone of the franchise, Star Trek: Discovery has managed to achieve something few series can: reinventing itself season after season without losing its essence. Instead of clinging to nostalgia, it boldly pushes forward — in both time and narrative — with a courageous focus on action, suspense, and a more war-driven atmosphere than other Trek entries. And for me, it really works. One of its strengths lies in its pacing. Discovery doesn’t dawdle. It gets straight to the point. Storylines kick off quickly, there's tension, movement, and a constant sense of urgency that feels more like Picard than Voyager or Deep Space Nine. Everything happens on the edge — characters don’t hold back, they take risks, they hesitate, they mess up… and that makes them real. Sure, there are episodes that get carried away and moments where some secondary characters feel underdeveloped. But when the show hits its stride, it really hits hard. The visuals are stunning, the sound design is sharp, and there are scenes that—on a good screen—completely pull you in. Michael Burnham, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, is the soul of the series. She's grown a lot since the beginning. At first, she was hard to connect with, but over time she’s become someone relatable: contradictory, vulnerable at times, but always driven. She’s not flawless — and that’s exactly why she works. All in all, Discovery has been, for me, one of the most compelling entries in the modern Star Trek universe. I get why purists might be put off, but that’s precisely what gives it value: it dares. Instead of repeating formulas, it explores. And in the end, that’s what Star Trek has always been — an invitation to go beyond.
