I think these worked fine with the simple dynamic as an eclectic bunch of beasties tried to bond trying to survive an impending exceedingly heavy frost. Now we have decided to let “Scrat” - who has now become just plain annoying, to chase his ever elusive acorn into outer space. Oh, if only he had been stranded there but no he manages to set in train a globally existential threat when he plays with with a not so defunct alien spaceship and ends up pinging a few large asteroids our way. Now they can’t have seen Sean Connery trying to deal with this problem, so he has to find a more rudimentary solution with the help of the ever woolly Ellie and Manny, Sid, the sharp-toothed Diego and some crystals which might just help save us from inter-planetary pulverisation. Can we be saved? Sadly, this just never really gets going and though the characters are all there, the writing just doesn’t give them the sharpness or fun from a wordy dialogue that’s just a bit tired. The whole concept just comes across as a cynically contrived marketing exercise that is really only a very distant cousin of the original sub-zero heroes from 2002. I doubt even the kids will get much from this, though on that front it’s an easy film to leave them in front of while you have a kip.
