James Cagney

Actor estadounidense, ganador de un Oscar por su interpretación del también actor y dramaturgo George M. Cohan en Yanki dandy (1942), de Michael Curtiz. Nace en Nueva York y estudia en la Universidad de Columbia. Comienza su carrera artística en Broadway, primero en el coro de Pitter Patter (1920) y luego bailando y cantando en vodeviles y revistas musicales de la década de 1920 hasta iniciarse en el cine con Las vacaciones del pescador en 1930, de John G. Adolfi. Su fama se cimentó sobre personajes duros e inflexibles, desde El enemigo público nº 1 (1931), de William A. Wellman, continuando con Avidez de tragedia (1932), de Howard Hawks, Ángeles con caras sucias (1938), de Michael Curtiz y Al rojo vivo (1949), de Raoul Walsh. Entre sus papeles en comedias destacan el de Bottom en El sueño de una noche de verano de Shakespeare (1935, William Dieterle y Max Reinhardt), el papel protagonista de Uno, dos, tres (1961, Billy Wilder) y el jefe de policía en Ragtime (1981, Milos Forman). En 1974, el American Film Institute le premió por toda una vida de dedicación profesional.
